New Book by Southern Colorado Artist Shows Depression

Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge, a self-help book by Diana Alishouse will be released by Doggie in the Window Publications on Saturday May 15. May is Depression Awareness Month.

This is the book that SHOWS what depression and bipolar disorders are like. If the symptoms of these common illnesses can be recognized as symptoms, not personal defects, the underlying disorder can be treated.

Alishouse, who first came to southern Colorado in 1957 was in the first graduating class from Wasson High School in 1960. She attended Colorado State College (now University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley graduating with a B.A. in Social Studies and English. She studied art at Metro State College in Denver.

This artist/author calls herself an “educated consumer” because she has experienced chronic depressive illness since childhood. After being diagnosed with major depression in her early forties she created the Ragged Edge, a series of fiber art work that gives a visual sense of the abnormal devastating emotions and thoughts of the victims of depressive and bipolar illness, as well as the wonderful life of happiness that is possible with treatment. Alishouse has spoken to local and national organizations and the Ragged Edge was shown at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge is available in bookstores, through the author’s website www.depressionvisible.com, and Doggie in the Window Publications, PO Box 1565, Duluth, GA 30096, www.doggieinthewindow.biz. Learn more at www.depressionvisible.com.

DEPRESSION VISIBLE: THE RAGGED EDGE
A NONFICTION BOOK BY DIANA ALISHOUSE
HELPS PEOPLE SEE WHAT DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS IS LIKE

Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge is the first book that shows what depression and bipolar illnesses are like. It is written in everyday language and illustrated with color photos of her Ragged Edge series of art quilts. Depression Visible, which will be released in May to coincide with National Mental Health Month, ISBN 978-0-9818251-5-1, will sell for $21.95.

Due to the stigma surrounding mental disorders, most people who have depression or bipolar disorder never seek treatment and are never properly diagnosed. Without treatment they live in a black hole of guilt, confusion, helplessness, and hopelessness that affects them and everyone around them. After being diagnosed with major depression in 1985, Alishouse learned as much as she could about her illness and turned that knowledge into visible form in her art quilts. Paraphrasing a quote by Picasso, Alishouse says, “My art helped me to seize power and give form to my terrors of the illness and to my desire to heal.” While Diana’s inspirational story of healing is unique, it also shows universal truths about depression.

Diana now uses her art and her book, Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge, to spread the word that depression is a physical brain disorder with physical, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. It can be treated successfully, “…but first,” she says, “the symptoms must be recognized as symptoms not as lack of will-power or a character defect.”

After The Ragged Edge series was shown at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C. in a show organized by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1991, Alishouse decided to use her artwork to help other victims of mood disorders through exhibits of her art quilts, lectures in which she shows and explains her artwork, and, now, her book Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge.

Doggie in the Window Publications can be reached at PO Box 1565, Duluth, GA 30096, 770-680-1779. Or by email at doggieinthewindow@comcast.net.
